The role Vitamin C can play in the common cold

"The more vitamin C a person takes, the less often he falls ill and the faster he recovers.

During a disease, 20 to 40 times more vitamin C is needed than otherwise to saturate the tissues."

Adelle Davis

The beneficial effects of Vitamin C

Sufficient vitamin C on a daily basis is necessary for many important processes in the body.

On the basis of what animals produce in quantitiesAs a result, we have gained a good idea of what our bodies need in terms of vitamin C.

The Our body's need of vitamin C corresponds to at least 40 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

So you Multiply your weight by 40 and then you have the minimum number of milligrams of vitamin C your body needs per day.

And this is the minimum your body needs in normal healthy conditions.

The absorption and effect of vitamin C is positively influenced by natural nutrients such as bioflavonoids, rutin, acerola and rose hip.

The beneficial biological effect of vitamin C, however, has mainly to do with the right amount.

We have already given you an overview of the many health benefits of vitamin C.

Vitamin C & our resistance

Vitamin C is perhaps the most well-known vitamin, mainly due to its positive influence on resistance.

In addition to Vitamin C, Vitamin D also plays an essential role for the immune system.

We recently wrote a newsletter about Vitamin D which you can read via the link below:

It is also well known that various other vitamins and minerals are essential for the normal functioning of the immune system, such as:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin C
  • Folic acid
  • Zinc
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Selenium

All these vitamins and minerals would therefore in an optimum balance must be taken together.

But Vitamin C in particular can play an important role in a rapid support in case of a cold or other infection.

Vitamin C can also be used to larger quantities without any problems without upsetting the balance of other vitamins and minerals.

Infection increased Vitamin C tolerance

The famous Nutritionist Adelle Davis wrote in one of her books that:

The more vitamin C someone takes, the less often he falls ill and the sooner he will be healthy again.

During an illness 20 to 40 times more vitamin C needed than otherwise to saturate the tissues."

Dr Cathcart conducted a study of over 9,000 people for more than 10 years, which showed that the intestinal system is the The following amounts of vitamin C can be toleratedwithout causing diarrhoea:

  • at healthy people 4 to 15 grams (4,000 - 15,000 mg).
  • in people with a cold al 30 to 60 grams (30,000 to 60,000 mg)
  • at serious infections it even rises to more than 200 grams (200,000 mg)

Vitamin C completely harmless

Considering the quantities indicated above, it is good to know that Vitamin C completely harmless is.

Adelle Davis wrote that even very large quantities of this vitamin completely harmless are."

Excessive vitamin C will simply be excreted with the urinebut this only happens when the body has enough to do all the saturate tissues

In addition, the body will when all tissues are saturated, no more vitamin C absorbed in the intestines.

The surplus will remain in the intestines and will then have a thin stools or diarrhoea.

This shows, on the one hand, that there are is absolutely no reason to worry about what happens when we take in a larger amount of vitamin C.

On the other hand, it is interesting because it can be used to determine how much vitamin C the body needs to include in various circumstances, as was done in the above study.

So what to do with colds?

As demonstrated in the above-mentioned study, the tolerance to vitamin C in a cold up to even 30 to 60 grams per 24 hours (30,000 to 60,000 mg) increase.

So a much larger amount of Vitamin C is needed to keep the tissues saturated.

It is therefore wise to for colds significantly more vitamin C than in normal circumstances.

It helps to have the vitamin C levels throughout the day by a regular Vitamin C intake.

It is therefore recommended that for colds 1,000 mg Vitamin C per hour and do not reduce this amount until all symptoms have disappeared.
