What you should know about Vitamin B6

  1. Limited number of reports of complaints from vitamin B6 use indicate (very) small chance of side effects
  2. Scientists indicate that only in the case of large quantities for a longer period of time neurological side effects may arise which, by the way, are completely reversible are.
  3. There are multiple forms of Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (P5P) does not cause any neurological side effects, even in larger quantities. This is the form of Vitamin B6 that FreeChoice uses.

Vitamin B6 legislation

In the period 2014 to 2016, there was a lot of media attention for Vitamin B6.

It was suggested that too much Vitamin B6 could cause neurological complaints.

This ultimately led to new law about vitamin B6.

And this new legislation limits the maximum daily intake of Vitamin B6:

"Dietary supplements contain per daily quantity used according to the instructions for use Not more than 21 mg of vitamin B6.”*

After the introduction of these regulations, the Most supplements adjusted to this very low maximum.

In addition, there must also be warnings on the packaging be reported for children:

  • Maximum 3 mg vitamin B6: this dietary supplement is not suitable for children under 1 year of age'.
  • 3 mg - 5 mg vitamin B6: ‘this dietary supplement is not suitable for children under the age of 3.
  • 5 mg - 7 mg vitamin B6: ‘this dietary supplement is not suitable for children under 10 years of age'.
  • more than 7 mg vitamin B6: ‘this dietary supplement is not suitable for children under 17 years of age.'*

So for children, the restrictions are even stricter.

But are these restrictions are justified and scientifically sound?

Here are a few arguments why these restrictions are not justified are:

Limited number of notifications

In more than 25 years Lareb has 73 reports received about Possible complaints due to vitamin B6.

Of these 73 reports, the 56 cases with adverse effects in the nervous system.

These reports are about Vitamin B6 in the form of pyridoxineone of the 6 forms of vitamin B6.

So we are talking about an average 3 reports per year for the whole of the Netherlands.

This while many people take multivitamins, Vitamin B complex or Vitamin B6 separately, every day.

In addition, for these reports no link between vitamin B6 and the symptoms has been demonstrated.

Lareb reports this on its website:

"It is not certain that there is a link between the reported complaint and the medicine. It is a suspicion of the reporter that the medicine has contributed to the complaints. "*

Nevertheless, on the basis of this limited data legislation drafted.

notable caution regarding Vitamin B6.

By way of comparison, in the past year almost 120,000 adverse reaction reports (in less than 1 year!) received at Lareb about the corona vaccinesincluding over 500 dead.

Instead of regulations or restrictions like with Vitamin B6, continue to encourage people to take these vaccines.

Games interests other than public health might play a role in these kinds of decisions?

 

What do scientists say

Emiritus Professor David A. Bender (biochemist at University College London), whose research focuses on vitamin B6 among other things, writes is his book 'Nutritional Biochemistry of the Vitamins'. the following about vitamin B6.

 

"There is little evidence that intakes up to 200 to 500 mg of vitamin B6 per day of prolonged periods are associated with any adverse effect.
The U.S. Food and Nutrition Board set a tolerable upper level for adults of 100 mg per day (Institute of Medicine, 1998); the European Union [Scientific Committee on Food, 2000] set 25 mg per day."

So what Bender is saying is that there is little or no evidence that an intake of 200 - 500 mg of vitamin B6 has any adverse effect. 

There is also virtually no scientific basis of the EFSA* maximum of 25 mg vitamin B6 per day for Europe.

That is why this low value deviates from the American minimum of 100 mg Vitamin B6 per day (4 times higher!).

We can therefore conclude that there are little cause for concern is about the use of vitamin B6.  

And so far we have only discussed Vitamin B6 in the form of Pyridoxine

No account taken of form of Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 occurs in nature in 6 different shapes:

  • Pyridoxine
  • Pyridoxine-5-phosphate
  • Pyridoxal
  • Pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P)
  • Pydridoxamine
  • Pyridoxamine-5-phosphate

From Pyridoxine is thus believed to have a small risk of neurological symptoms when taken in large quantities over a long period of time..

However, it is also known that vitamin B6 is used in the bioactive form pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (P5P) no neurological symptoms caused.

This can all be explained from the biochemical reactions in which Vitamin B6 is involved.
